And ‘whyyyyyy is this all happening?" you might ask
:

Between the two, acclaimed films "The Help" and "A Better LIfe" have been nominated for 5 Academy Awards, and they have helped draw attention to the stories and struggles of domestic & immigrant workers, respectively. Actress Octavia Spencer was recently recognized with a Golden Globe for her role in The Help and had this to say: "With regard to domestics in this country, now and then, I think Dr. King said it best: ‘All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance.’ And I thank you for recognizing that with our film." And after receiving the nomination for Best Actor for his role in "A Better Life", Demian Bichir is using his platform to praise undocumented immigrants. He commented: "I dedicate this nomination to those eleven million human beings who make our lives easier and better in the U.S."

With the millions of people around the globe whose eyes will be on the Oscars on February 26, we are using the opportunity to raise awareness of (and further expand on the conversations around) issues affecting immigrant workers.

On Oscar night National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) will be hosting Academy Award viewing parties all around the nation to keep talking with our friends and family about how domestic workers touch our lives and do the work that makes all other work possible. In Seattle, Casa Latina will host a party to learn more about these issues, rally support for the efforts of local workers, and help raise money to continue their organizing work.

A Little More Background

In the 1930s, the National Labor Relations Act was passed to protect the rights of most workers in the United States. In a concession to Southern lawmakers hoping to maintain slavery-era work conditions for African Americans & other people of color, domestic workers and farmworkers were deliberately excluded from these laws and the protections they offered. Many of these exclusions remain in effect today. As a result, domestic workers are one of the most vulnerable workforces in the nation, working without the benefit of core labor standards or basic employment protections. But we are changing this. Today, the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading voice and vehicle of an estimated 2.5 million women in the United States who are organizing other domestic workers and supporters to establish labor standards for the domestic and care giving workforce.

Lemme know if you have any questions. Hope to see you there!
